NAIDOC Week with Wilson Security
NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration of the history, culture and achievements Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
As a part of our vision, we are committed to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and Businesses to protect the future and create an enduring legacy in the communities that we work.
Across our offices nationally, we celebrated NAIDOC Week with a number of events and activities to raise awareness amongst our staff and clients. Read on to find out how we celebrated.
Our Townsville office hosted a free screening of the award winning documentary “In My Blood It Runs” at Reading Cinemas in Cannon Park for the Traditional Owners, Wilson staff and their families and some of our clients.
At our Shoalhaven Defence site in NSW, Our staff and members of the Indigenous Committee ordered black, yellow and red jelly beans, symbolising the colours of the Aboriginal Flag to celebrate NAIDOC Week in our coastal region.
Our ACT office has been busy making daily pancakes in the colours of the Indigenous flag and sharing the history and stories of NAIDOC week with staff. They have also visited significant Canberra Landmarks including the War Memorial and Carillon that have amazing Indigenous experiences on offer.
The SA team had morning tea catered by an Indigenous business and screened the documentary “In My Blood It Runs”.
In Perth we had a Welcome to Country performed by Matthew McGuire of the Whadjuk Noongar people and morning tea catered for by an Indigenous Business.
In Victoria our team held a morning tead to celebrate NAIDOC week in our patrol dept.
In our Sydney office Wala & Gene from Walangari Karntawarra (B.A. & B. Ed.) and Diramu Aboriginal Dance and Didgeridoo were delighted to share their rich Australian First Nations’ culture at our NAIDOC event. We began with an Acknowledgement and cleansing ceremony (video to follow) followed by a show of museum quality artefacts such as a shield & boomerang that was well over 100 years old. Walangari showed us types of instruments, tools & boomerangs accompanied by stories of their life and various uses.
Lastly, in the Northern Territory we unveiled our new uniforms designed by Tony Lee of the Larrakia People and presented to Robert Cooper (CEO) and Nelson Tinoco of the Larrakia Nation organisation. Amanda, the Manager of Woolworths Leanyer, was also in attendance as the uniforms will be worn in our Woolworths stores across Darwin. We are humbled to have such a great partnership with Larrakia Nation.
